Kunstmuseum Bochum

The exhibition Unerwartet / Unexpected is the official contribution of the Kunstmuseum Bochum to ‘Mapping the Region’, the series of exhibitions hosted by the Ruhr Art Museums on the occasion of the Capital of Culture Ruhr.2010. On three mutually interdependent levels (Photography Project by T. Manninnen, Classical Islamic Art, Contemporary Art from Islamic Cultures) the presentation visualises influences and potentials of Islamic cultural areas, opening an international perspective on this basis. Though a visible result of the globalization process a general worldwide westernization, artists from non-western countries, especially from Middle East, Far East, still find themselves regularly viewed as an ethnic phenomenon representing to the totality of their culture. This is a dilemma that lot of non-western artists shares irrespective of whether they are living in Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco or Europe.
